Megève in short

Megève offers an authentic and typically alpine village feel with a certain touch of luxury. This village in the Haute Savoie centres around the old church, which dates back to the year 1085. Megève played an important role in the development of skiing, with the resort’s first skiing competition held as early as 1914 and the first cable car built uniquely for skiers inaugurated in 1933. Today, Megève is part of the Evasion Mont-Blanc ski area and grants access to just over 400km of ski runs in exceptional mountain setting that includes the nearby villages of Les Contamines, Combloux and Saint-Gervais.

Megève has been completely restored and now has a charming pedestrian village centre with quiet streets and high-end shops. Bars, cafés and restaurants fill up from lunchtime onwards in Megève and they don’t close until the early hours of the morning. The après-ski is chic but friendly, just what you would expect from the resort of Megève. The resort is popular with skiers and snowboarders, especially families with children, who come to enjoy the good life and sunny ski slopes. Megève is nestled in the heart of the Mont Blanc region in France, about an hour’s drive from Chambéry Airport or an 8-hour drive from Calais.

Skiing in the Evasion Mont-Blanc

The Rochebrune (1754m), Jaillet (1580m) and Mont d’Arbois (1840m) pistes are easily accessible via lifts straight from the village of Megève. All three sectors have runs for every ability level, and picturesque forests line the lower-altitude slopes. Freestylers will want to head to the Waidzai Snow Park in Rochebrune, best adapted for beginner and intermediate freestylers. Megève is centrally located within the Evasion Mont-Blanc ski area, with the slopes of Combloux and La Giettaz accessible via Jaillet and the slopes of Saint Gervais accessible via Mont Joux. The towering Mont Blanc watches over you as you ski. Stop in for a midday break at one of the many mountain restaurants, with their magnificent views of the surrounding alpine summits.

Off the slopes in Megève

Megève offers a place to relax and unwind off the beaten track. Explore the scenic surroundings on foot or by snowshoe. Discover the ancient history of the village and finish off your tour with a scenic ride along the cobblestone streets in a horse-drawn carriage. Or, let your tastebuds do the work - as you would expect from such an exclusive ski resort, Megève is home to no less than three Michelin-starred restaurants. The Palais in Megève has an aquatic centre, an ice skating rink and a wellness area, among other things. Megève is a regular host of the Grande Odyssée Mont-Blanc dogsledding race, which takes place annually in January.

Ski holiday with the kids in Megève

Megève prides itself on being a family-friendly ski resort and the mascot, Billy Bosteu, welcomes children with open arms. The Les Frimousses crèche takes care of children aged 18 months to 4 years, providing fun indoor and outdoor activities. In addition to the competent French ski instructors, the British Alpine Ski School has a base in Megève where you can book ski lessons with English-speaking ski instructors. When the kids get tired of skiing, off-the-slopes activities you can do as a family include sledging, dogsledding or driving on ice.
