Lech am Arlberg is a favourite with royal families, and Princess Diana is rumoured to have taken Prince William and Prince Harry here as children. That should tell you all you need to know: Lech is known for its luxury and exclusivity. This of course comes with the corresponding price tag, although it is possible to find moderately priced accommodation if you know where to look. Lech tends to draw less crowds than neighbouring St. Anton am Arlberg and the village has retained its traditional character. Lech is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle. The village has great spa and wellness facilities for relaxing after a tough day on the slopes. There is après-ski to suit every taste and budget. A little further up the mountain, Oberlech is a traffic-free zone with abundant parking facilities.
Lech's village centre has a pleasant atmosphere with an assortment of shops, restaurants and après-ski bars. Several of the ski slopes lead right into the resort centre. Lech is connected to the linked Ski Arlberg ski area, which offers a total of more than 300km of slopes. Lech and its neighbour Zürs am Arlberg offer mostly intermediate slopes. This makes them a popular day trip for skiers staying at nearby St. Anton who are looking for an easier time of it! Ski Arlberg is known for having reliable snow cover, ensuring good conditions and long ski seasons. Lech also generates 80% of its energy from a sustainable biomass heating plant, making the ski resort a very environmentally friendly choice for ski holidays.
The runs at Lech and Zürs are mostly blue and red, making this a paradise for intermediate skiers. Freeriders will enjoy the many off-piste routes in Lech. The Snowpark Lech offers jumps, rails and kickers for beginner and expert freestylers alike. Thanks to the new Flexenbahn cable car, inaugurated in the 2016-17 ski season, the entire Ski Arlberg ski area is now connected by lifts and slopes, meaning there is no need to take a ski bus if you want to visit St. Anton or one of the other neighbouring ski areas. Currently, Ski Arlberg is the largest contiguous ski area in Austria with 305km of slopes accessible without having to click out of your skis or snowboard. Lech is a stop on the White Ring, a 22km ski circuit that takes skiers through the different Ski Arlberg villages. The White Ring: The Race is an annual ski race on this very ski circuit that brings together some of the world's most ambitious skiers.
There is plenty to do off the ski slopes at Lech. Cross-country skiers can explore the region on 30km of trails. Zürs has an outdoor ice skating rink, and there is a spectacular floodlit tobogganing run that runs from Oberlech to Lech. Other activities at Lech include ice climbing and sleigh rides. Lech doesn't go in for your typical rowdy Austrian après-ski scene, instead preferring a cosy atmosphere where friends can enjoy drinks together in a civilised manner. Even the nightclubs describe themselves as 'sophisticated'! While there are several après-ski options on the slopes and in the village, diehard partiers are better off staying in St. Anton, the birthplace of après-ski.
