Seefeld is a chic ski resort, idyllically located amidst beautiful forests. It's impossible to leave out mentioning this classy Austrian resort when naming all-round winter sports resorts. Boasting about 250 kilometres of cross-country skiing trails, Seefeld is an absolute top-notch destination for cross-country skiers of all levels. The downhill ski area is also wonderful. Linked with the Olympiaregion Seefeld, it's perfect for families and skiers who want to practise their carving.
Seefeld is part of the Olympiaregion Seefeld linked ski area, which has several dozen kilometres of ski slopes that are worth exploring. The stunning forests around Seefeld offer winter hikers many interesting options. Other activities you can try during your ski holidays in Seefeld include curling, snow rafting and swimming. The charming village of Seefeld has a car-free centre and the streets are lined with cosy bars, restaurants and shops to browse. This Austrian ski resort is not known for its wild après-ski scene, but in exchange it offers a more traditional form of après-ski in the many cafes, bars and restaurants. Seefeld hosted several events in the Winter Olympics '64 and '76. The village is just a half-hour drive from Innsbruck Airport, making it the perfect spot for a ski weekend getaway.
The Olympiaregion Seefeld ski area comprises the towns of Seefeld, Leutasch, Scharnitz, Mösern bei Seefeld and Reith. In total, the linked ski area offers around 35km of pistes, with snow until April. Intermediate skiers and snowboarders will feel particularly at home in Seefeld, and it's a common sight to see athletic skiers zipping down the same run two or three times in a row. There are some perfect wide blue pistes for carving, and if you want to measure your speed against your friends, there's a slalom track where you can duke it out. In recent years Seefeld has turned to snow farming as an eco-friendly way to ensure snow cover from one winter to the next.
The Olympiaregion Seefeld puts a focus on nordic skiing and has hosted the nordic events of the Winter Olympics more than once. This is the absolute mecca for anyone who loves winter hiking and cross-country skiing. The region boasts more than 400km of winter hiking and nordic skiing trails, and regularly hosts important nordic skiing events. Take the opportunity to explore the forests surrounding Seefeld, or the wide-open mountain plateaus - the routes snake out from the town in every direction. Of course, Seefeld itself is also worth a leisurely stroll.
Thinking about bringing the kids, but not sure if the ski resort is set up for families? Fear not. Smack dab in the middle of Seefeld's ski area is a large, sunny kinderland. Right next to it is a nursery slope with a drag lift. If you don't want to teach the kids to ski yourself, they'll be in good hands with the competent ski instructors. And once they get their ski legs (pardon the pun), it's easy for the whole family to organise a day of skiing together, as there are pistes are not too intimidating. When the little ones are tired of skiing, you can hit up the swimming pool, go tobogganing or go ice skating on one of the skating rinks.
Seefeld is the kind of place where people prefer to savour a fine glass of wine rather than sweat it out in a damp and sticky après-ski joint. Accordingly, the bars and restaurants have a luxurious atmosphere to them and you're more likely to hear lounge music, jazz or soul than the latest après-ski hits. But this doesn't necessarily mean you can't have a good time - stop in at Woods, the Fledermaus or Fundisco Buffalo & Jeep for a lively night, or try your luck in the casino and see if you can get your ski holiday paid for! Har, har...
