Obergurgl in short

  • Height: 1930 metres
  • Europe's highest located church village
  • No waiting times for the lifts
  • Snow-sure destination

At 1930 metres, Obergurgl is the highest church village in Europe and is located at the end of Ötztal. It is an attractive ski village with low waiting times at the lifts and wide sunny slopes both, for beginners and advanced skiers. The resort and its ski area Gurgl are extremely snow-sure. Not surprisingly, there is a steady stream of visitors here every year. Obergurgl has an international flair and an exclusive atmosphere. There is a 5-star hotel and more than 20 four-star accommodations. Fortunately, there are always plenty of guesthouses and holiday homes too. The car-free centre and lack of through traffic only add to the village's friendly, pleasant character. There are several shops, restaurants and bars in the centre of Obergurgl. For families with children, there is childcare and a practice area with conveyor belt.

From the village, several lifts lead to the slopes of ski resort Gurgl. You have more than 100 kilometres of slopes at your disposal here, which are snow-assured from late November to early May. If you like challenging slopes, take the lift to Hohe Mut (2670 m). The Roßkarbahn and Festkogelbahn disclose a versatile range of pistes for various levels of ability. In this part of the ski area there are wide 'Autobahnen', a large snowpark and various ski routes. The Top-Express provides the connection to the slopes of Hochgurgl. For cross-country skiers, Obergurgl also has an altitude trail. A beautiful winter hiking trail leads through the Obergurgler Zirbenwald to the Schönwieshütte at an altitude of 2266 m. Obergurgl also has a (floodlit) ice rink.

“I have been going to Obergurgl for about 18 years and in my opinion it's going downhill. The skiing is great, but there are more and more tourists and especially rich tourists. Each year there is less of a cosy atmosphere; doesn't feel as authenti...”

Ski resort Gurgl: snow guaranteed from November to May

Ski resort Gurgl appeals to every type of skier. From the Hohe Mut (2670 m) start a couple of tough downhill runs and also on the Festkogel there are some nice black runs. Those who prefer a quieter approach also have plenty of options. There are several wide, blue pistes that are also suitable for beginners. With the Top-Express you can cross over to the pistes of Hochgurgl. Here, too, there are many blue slopes, but also steeper, black challenges. For the best views, you should head to the Top Mountain Star restaurant (3080 m) anyway. From here, your view reaches all the way to the Dolomites. Ski resort Gurgl's big advantage is its snow security. Its high altitude means you can ski here from late November to early May. With a multi-day ski pass, you also have access to the other ski areas of Ötztal, including Sölden-Hochsölden-Vent.

Après-ski in Obergurgl

For cosy après-ski, Obergurgl is also the place to be. A good place to start the après-ski is the Nederhütte next to the Hohe Mut Bahn II. This mountain hut is located at an altitude of 2104 metres, so keep in mind that you still have to ski down. Near the valley station of the Hohe Mut Bahn I is the Edelweiss umbrella bar, which is also often very cosy in the afternoon. Later in the afternoon, or evening, you can go to s'Fassl, Ice Berg and Friedl's Bar.
