Modern infrastructure
Situated in northern Lake Tahoe, Northstar has been owned by Vail Resorts since 2010 and now presents itself as a glitzy, stress-free destination ski resort. Modern lift infrastructure, guaranteed snow and impeccably groomed slopes make this a popular destination for well-to-do families. The village at the base is chock-full of upscale accommodation including a five-star Ritz Carlton hotel.
Northstar caters to families and the parents that accompany them, with a range of options for pampering yourself. Indulge in a mountaintop glass of champagne accompanied by a decadent charcuterie board, or book yourself a spot for a mountaintop breakfast and first tracks in the morning. There is also a range of non-skiing activities on offer, including snowtubing, yoga, ice skating and a luxurious spa. Reno/Tahoe International Airport is a 40-minute drive.
Alternate activities
Northstar also offers cross-country skiing, telemarking, snowshoeing, snowtubing, spa, yoga, ice skating, cinema, shops and live music in the village.
Restaurants and bars
There are a dozen bars and restaurants sprinkled throughout the village and slopes. Après-ski starts with free s’mores (roasted marshmallows on biscuits with chocolate chips) by the fire in the village. If you're looking for livelier nightlife later on, head to nearby Truckee.
Families
Northstar puts the focus on families and the layout of the resort is very family-friendly. Childcare is available for children ages 2-6 and Northstar is renowned for the quality of its children’s ski lessons.
