Ski-in, ski-out options
Flaine was designed by Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer in the sixties and is the only modern ski resort to be recognised as an architectural treasure. Flaine is home to sculptures inspired by Dubuffet, Picasso and Vasarely and some of its concrete-block architecture actually includes listed buildings, although the overall effect is rather stark. However, despite the unwelcoming architecture, the ski resort of Flaine has many advantages. It is surrounded by the 260km of ski slopes which make up the wonderful Le Grand Massif ski area, linking the ski resorts of Morillon, Les Carroz, Samoëns and Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval.
The town centre is traffic-free and divided into 3 levels: Flaine Forum, Flaine Forêt and Flaine Front de Neige, which are all linked by lifts and accessible on foot. This Savoyard ski resort has much to offer families and those looking for great skiing conditions. Thanks to its altitude and its location in the heart of a natural corrie, the ski area enjoys exceptional snow conditions, even recording over 9 metres of snowfall some winters! Flaine is conveniently located between the towering Mont Blanc and the beautiful Lake Geneva, and is particularly easy to access by air. There are several airports just a short drive away, including Geneva and Chambéry, so ski weekends and short ski holidays in Flaine are perfectly feasible.
Flaine and Le Grand Massif
The 140km or so of pistes at Flaine follow the mountain's natural fall line, offering plenty of options for cruising down on the wide, perfectly groomed slopes. Flaine puts an emphasis on creative freestyling and freeriding with funslopes, boardercross, a big air bag and fantastic off-piste terrain in the Combe de Gers, Lindars and Véret areas. Beginner skiers and families with young children will find it's easy to explore Flaine using only blue slopes. If you need more terrain, the entire Grand Massif ski area is at your disposal, with more than 260km of pistes. Great opportunities are also on offer for cross-country skiers, snowshoers and winter hikers, with a number of trails in the surrounding area.
Kids first at Flaine!
At Flaine, families will find free activities and child-friendly shows designed to keep the kids entertained. You can be assured the kids are in good hands at the childcare centres and ski schools, and many of the hotels offer kids' clubs so mum and dad can escape to the slopes for a few hours. Add to this the long list of non-skiing activities and you can see why Flaine is the first choice for many families on their ski holidays.
Fun off the slopes
Paragliding, snow kiting, ice driving, swimming, rock climbing, bowling, ice skating, dogsledding and sledging are just a few of the many activities that Flaine offers off the slopes. There are several spas in town so you can rest your tired muscles after a long day of skiing or snowboarding. In terms of nightlife, Flaine Forum is the heart of the resort and is where you will find most of the après-ski, with a few bars offering live music. While you're in the Haute-Savoie, don't miss the chance to partake in a traditional fondue or raclette evening!
