Incredible powder snow
Tucked away in the small town of Rossland, British Columbia, Red Mountain Resort is unique in North America in its singular drive to avoid getting bought out by a large corporation. The Canadian ski resort launched a crowdfunding campaign in 2017 offering their fans a chance to “Fight the Man, Own the Mountain” and have thus managed to remain independent for the time being. With 120km of slopes, amazing champagne powder, almost 8m of average yearly snowfall and pristine winter landscapes, let’s hope people keep fighting for this ski resort!
Red Mountain Resort is located on Canada’s famous Powder Highway, in the Kootenay Rockies. The ski area is split over three mountains: Red Mountain, Granite Mountain and the newly added Grey Mountain. Red Mountain Resort is an excellent ski area for advanced and expert skiers, with a wealth of steep black- and double-black diamond glades. Confident beginners will also have a field day on the long, meandering green pistes that wind their way all the way from the top to the bottom of the mountain. Intermediate skiers and snowboarders may chafe a bit at the relatively small offering of blue pistes, but with the forgiving powder snow, it’s not as daunting to try out some of the easier black terrain. Freestylers can try out the terrain park (including skier/boarder cross) and freeriders will be in heaven as the whole mountain is basically one big off-piste playground! If you’re in search of even more terrain there are four mountain peaks where you can go ski touring - hire a guide and know your avalanche safety info. Red Mountain has two snow cannons and weekly night skiing sessions.
