Perfect Austrian ski resorts for beginners
As a beginner skier or snowboarder, you don't need hundreds of kilometres of slopes; a good practice slope and a handful of blue runs are enough for your first winter sports holidays. If you have a lot of talent, you might even pick up a simple red run in your first week, but this is the exception rather than the rule. This article highlights some excellent Austrian ski resorts for beginners.
Tiroler Zugspitz Arena
On the Austrian side of the Zugspitze mountain, within the ski area of the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena, there are a number of small villages with perfect ski resorts for beginners. They are small, feature many blue runs and aren't too crowded. Berwang, Ehrwald and Biberwier are excellent beginner destinations. You will find great practice slopes and plenty of blue pistes to try your turns on. From the Ehrwalder Alm, you can even ski all the way down to the valley on a blue slope.
Pertisau am Achensee: Zwölferkopf
Pertisau am Achensee: Zwölferkopf is a modest ski resort with many gentle slopes, perfect for beginners. It boasts 15 kilometres of slopes - more than enough for an average beginner. Moreover, Pertisau is a quiet, relaxed village where cross-country skiers and hikers can also have a great time.
SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser - Brixental
Although the size of SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser - Brixental might suggest otherwise, this ski area is very suitable for beginners. It stretches around the colossal Hohe Salve mountain, surrounded by nine villages, and boasts 288 km of slopes. As a beginner, you will definitely not see them all. Between the Hohe Salve and the Wilder Kaiser mountain range lies the village of Ellmau - a perfect destination for beginners who can practice their turn on the flanks of the Astberg (1267 m). Another excellent destination for beginners is Brixen im Thale, located on the other side of the SkiWelt. It boasts an exquisite beginner's area on the Zinsberg.
Almenwelt Lofer
Lofer attracts a very different winter sports crowd than its well-known neighbours Saalbach, Hinterglemm and Kitzbühel. You'll find no après-ski or challenging slopes here but a cosy ski area with almost 50 kilometres of pistes. The pistes of Almenwelt Lofer are predominantly blue and ideal for learning your first turns. As they are not too crowded, you won't have to take too much notice of the others and be able to enjoy your first days on the slopes to the fullest.
