Three family activities to try at Saalbach-Hinterglemm

Austria’s Saalbach-Hinterglemm ski resort is famous for its 270km of slopes and fabulous après-ski scene. With four resorts combined into one, skiers of all levels are sure to have a blast. But the fun doesn’t end there! If you think outside the box, there are plenty of other family activities to explore in this winter wonderland. Whether it’s a rainy day or you just need a break from helping the kids snowplough down the nursery slopes, you’ll have no end of things to keep you occupied during your family holidays. Here are some of Snowplaza’s favourites!

#1. Ice skating in Hinterglemm

You can find the skating rink at Hinterglemm on the edge of the village, by the main road. The rink is open from 10am to 10pm all winter long and offers a rental service as well as adorable plastic seals to help out first-time skaters. If all that skating has gotten you thirsty, you can warm up with a hot cocoa in the bistro at Hinterglemm’s sports centre.

#2. Sledge rides on the Spielberg Alm

Saalbach-Hinterglemm also offers several sledging options, with one run over 3km long off the Reiterkogel cable car and another one between the Spielberg House and Saalbach which offers a variety of steepness for all levels. Take a beautiful nightlit journey through the peaceful slopes of Saalbach-Hinterglemm and discover another side of this bustling ski resort. After the lifts close, you can choose to hike to the top or hitch a ride in a pistenbully. And while you’re at the Spielberg House, don’t miss the Pinzgauer Kasnocken, small dumplings oozing with melted cheese.

Spielberg Alm: open daily (except Sundays) between 5pm and 9pm for €8, including sledge rental and transport by snowcat.
Reiterkogelbahn: open daily from 8:30am to 4:15pm Monday til Saturday from 6pm to 9:30pm. Sledge rentals for €7.50 per day; Reiterkogelbahn cable car included with lift ticket

The snow tubing lift is complimentary after 4pm for skiers and snowboarders with a valid lift ticket.

About Danielle

Born and raised in the ski paradise of Vancouver, Canada, I learned to ski before I can remember, balancing precariously on my parents’ skis as they sailed down the hill. I started snowboarding in my teens and am now delighted to be exploring everything Europe’s ski scene has to offer!
