Just when you thought you knew everything about Tignes, this Savoyard ski resort in the French Alps, so popular with British skiers, pulled Tignes 1800 out of its hat! When we talk about the French ski resort of Tignes we usually think of the 3 ski resorts (La Lavachet, Le Lac, Val Claret) where most of the ski lifts up to the Espace Killy ski area start from. However, the village of Les Boisses, at 1800 meters, which was previously just a checkpoint on the road to Tignes for most tourists, has, this winter, after major development, led to the birth of Tignes 1800! A great new family ski resort with everything for your perfect ski holidays.
Tignes 1800 - family ski holiday paradise
It must be said that Tignes 2100, with its high altitude, world-famous snow parks and many trendy après-ski bars, is not really a haven for families with young children looking for relaxing family ski holidays. Children can suffer from the low temperatures as well as altitude sickness as the children’s ski area is located at 2600 meters above sea level, and parents may feel a little out of place among the young and trendy crowd on the ski slopes. 50% of skiers and snowboarders in Tignes are, in fact, under 35 years old making them statistically pretty young! This is the main reason behind the idea of creating the new family ski resort at Tignes 1800. In this new resort, everything has been designed so that children AND their parents feel at ease: a specially designed beginners' area on the Marais plateau and accommodation that has been built with families in mind - larger apartments with up to 5 rooms for 10 people, better insulation to ensure a good night’s sleep for everyone and a real living area with a fireplace. The cherry on the cake in Tignes 1800 is the heated swimming pool with children's paddling pool and water jets in animal shapes and a Decleor spa for adults. Everything has been thought of for great family après-ski and relaxing ski holidays!
Tignes 1800 – rebirth of a ski resort
It would be wrong to think that the new ski resort of Tignes 1800 has been created ex nihilo. This location has actually been the communal center of Tignes since 1952 and the inauguration of the dam that flooded the old town. When you drive up from Bourg Saint Maurice, you can still see the tower of the Saint-Jacques church of Les Boisses nestled between the four new stone and wood chalets, built in the purest Savoyard style, which gives the feeling of being in a real mountain village. However, it was the installation of the new 8-seater gondola in Les Boisses in 2010 that gave a big boost to the revival of Tignes 1800. Replacing a dilapidated 2-seater chairlift, the new 8-seater gondola connects the newly-built ski accommodation to the plateau of the Marais, where two chairlifts connect to Tignes 2100, giving access to the whole of the Espace Killy ski area linking to the ski resort of Val d'Isère and the top of the "Aiguille Rouge" from where the famous black run, La Sache, starts.
Amenities for the whole family in Tignes 1800
Despite the recent construction of ski accommodation in Tignes 1800, there was actually already everything in place that tourists may need during their ski holidays. In addition to a bakery, a small supermarket, two ski hire shops and an ESF ski school agency, it is here, in Tignes 1800 that locally-born restaurant owner, Guerlain Chicherit, decided to open his trendy, Asian-inspired restaurant, Four 7. This decision is certainly proof that today, Tignes 1800, has already become an exclusive ski resort in the Savoy!
