The 2014 Winter Olympics started today in the Russian town of Sochi with British athletes competing in snowboard slopestyle and figure skating events 24 hours before the opening ceremony which takes place tomorrow at the Fisht stadium. The last time the sporting events got under way before the official opening ceremony was 30 years ago! The Olympic organising committee has been working 24 hours a day to make sure venues are ready to welcome the athletes and hotels ready to welcome international guests so it makes you wonder why the early start!

The official opening ceremony of Sochi 2014 will start at 4pm tomorrow (GMT), Friday the 7th of February and promises to be a ceremony to be remembered! The ceremony will be hosted by famous Russian TV celebrities and Russian popstars will be entertaining the visitors. Ticket holders will have the chance to visit parts of the Sochi 2014 Olympic park which will not be seen on television including the welcoming homes of different countries and the pavilions of the Games' Partners. Visitors attending the opening Ceremony have been advised to dress warmly!

Great Britain has a UK sport medal target between 3 and 7 podium finishes. This is very optimistic as Britain's most successful Olympics were in 1924 when we won 4 medals! British talent Jamie Nicholls got the games off to a great start this morning as he qualified for a place in the finals of the snowboard slopestyle event after scoring 86.75 on his second run and finishing fourth. Billy Morgan made the semi-finals with a score of 85.50. In the women's event, triple X Games gold medallist Jenny Jones and Aimee Fuller made the semi-finals after finishing fifth tenth respectively! In the figure skating events this afternoon, Stacey Kemp and David King aim to follow in Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean's footsteps and hopes are high for Matthew Parr, 3-time national champion.
