The white stuff is on its way! From today light to medium snowfalls are forecast in the Swiss, Austrian and French mountains - and not only at high altitudes! The first leaves have barely started to fall from the trees and they will be under winter’s white blanket already before they reach the ground! Snow this early in the Autumn really means a great start to the winter ski season as when the ground freezes, even if most of the early snow melts, there is a good cold, hard surface ready for the really heavy snowfalls to settle on. I can’t wait to see the first images over the next few days!
Snow as low as 500 meters
You can hardly imagine that the first real snow will fall over the next few days when most of Europe has had the most glorious Indian summer! However, from today until the weekend, dramatic temperature changes and precipitation are forecast meaning that light to medium snowfalls will occur across the Swiss, Austrian and French Alps. This is certainly not unusual at this time of the year but what is exceptional is the low altitude at which the snow is forecast to fall – in some areas, as low as 500 meters! The snow plows are being prepared as we speak and will be back out of the garage very shortly!
Artic conditions in Austria
Some climate experts have already predicted a winter in which many records will be broken! According to the German meteorologist Dominik Jung, this winter may be the coldest in a hundred years. In Austria, inhabitants of the capital of the Tyrol skiing region - Innsbruck – have already got their winter coats and snow boots out of the closet; Friday is forecast to be as cold as minus 8 degrees - an extremely low temperature for this time of the year! Over the next two days there should be between 20 and 45 cms of fresh snow! Although, it’s easy to understand that inhabitants of the Alps might not all be looking forward to these weather conditions but we, at Snowplaza, are like a bunch of kids getting all over-excited!
