Ever thought about taking a summer holiday in the mountains but in the end you were too tempted by idyllic photos of sandy beaches and crystal clear waters and skies? Or you were really keen but you just couldn’t quite convince the rest of the family or your group of friends that they wouldn’t get bored on a summer holiday in the mountain? Well over the next few weeks I am going to change the way you and yours think about summer holidays and show you all the possibilities available to suit even the most demanding holiday maker – you won’t be able to resist!
Mountain vs beach
Have you had enough of those dirty, over-crowded European beaches packed with Brits and noisy kids where the only difference from being back home is the sunburn and the sand that sticks to everything! Well a summer holiday spent in the mountains means no more crowds, no more sleepless nights spent tossing and turning in airless hotel rooms, no queues and no traffic jams! Fantastic scenery, clean fresh air, wide open spaces with plenty of room for everyone, and tons of varied activities are what’s in store for you in the mountains in the summer.

The mountains in the winter are well-known for being a huge natural playground and the same applies in the summer – in fact there’s even more choice of things to do! If you have demanding kids or friends in your group who are avid water lovers or who just can’t sit still on holiday, then here’s a taster of the activities on offer to keep them busy and out of trouble for a week or two!
Most of these activities are suited to both adults and children, although some of the more dangerous ones that demand certain skills may have a minimum age restriction for participants.
- Hydrospeed or riverboarding – using a float and wearing flippers, you ride the rapids at varying speeds…
- Pot holing – discover underground rivers, caves and stunning rock formations.
- Paragliding – one of the best ways to really appreciate the breathtaking mountain scenery – from a bird’s eye view!
- Mountain biking – from beginners to extreme bikers, there are trails for all levels.
- Walking and hiking – exercise followed by a picnic with only the birds and summer breeze to accompany you while admiring the top of the world!
- Rock climbing – climbing and abseiling can be a thrilling way of discovering mountain flora and fauna up close…
- Via Ferrata – a challenging mix of walking and rock climbing following a course using fixed ropes and ladders – not for those who suffer from vertigo!
- Tree climbing adventure parks – varied activities that take place up in the tree canopy - generally adapted for both adults and children.
This is, of course, just a brief list but I’ll be giving you more details of these and many more activities in my articles over the coming weeks – so watch this space. Preparation, tuition and guidance are offered for the vast majority of these activities so get ready to learn some new skills and maybe overcome a few of your fears! Leave a comment or join us on Facebook and tell us if you’ve tried any of the above – or any other summer mountain activities.
