Switzerland, the country of mouth-watering chocolates and Gruyère cheese, has to be one of my all time favourite ski holiday destinations. Although, of course, every European winter sports country has something unique to offer,
Switzerland
just keeps coming back to the top of the list each year.
Whether it’s because I’m a romantic at heart or I just love the feeling of being transported back in time, Swiss mountains and their ski resorts just seem to have that little extra something that keeps me coming back for more…
The most beautiful mountains in the Alps
It’s a difficult claim to make and of course, it’s also a question of taste, but I don’t think I’m alone when I say that Switzerland has the most beautiful mountains in the Alps. From the stunning Matterhorn to the notorious north face of the Eiger, almost everyone has heard of Switzerland’s famous peaks.
Tradition and charm
Swiss ski resorts have nearly all been built around traditional mountain villages so you’ll rarely find a purpose-built ski resort in
Switzerland
making a pleasant change from some of the respective French ski resorts. Ski resorts in
Switzerland
have a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere thanks to their traditional architecture and the fact that many have pedestrian centers such as
Wengen
and
Saas Fee.
Accommodation is generally very traditional and charming, with an excellent level of services on offer which is what makes Swiss ski resorts so special – they have managed to keep their traditions and charm intact while offering top class, modern services. The many authentic old buildings in pedestrian areas give the impression that time has stopped and you feel as if you’ve been transported back in time.

Up on the Swiss slopes
Most ski resorts in Switzerland are high meaning guaranteed snow late into the season with a lot of skiing on glacier areas. Like everything in
Switzerland, the ski slopes are perfectly groomed and the lifts are very modern and efficient.
Many of the Swiss ski resorts are linked together by efficient lift systems, giving access to huge ski areas with only one ski pass. For example in
Verbier, the ski pass covers the whole of the 4 Valleys ski area including the resorts of Haute Nendaz and Les Tzoumaz, giving access to skiing for all tastes and levels.
The world famous Swiss ski resorts of Davos, Klosters, St. Moritz and Flims/Laax make up the vast 7,000 km² Graubunden ski area. Not even the most demanding skiers will get bored in Switzerland! If you’re a freestyle enthusiast, head to Flims Laax, home of the Burton European Open and one of the best freestyle set-ups in Europe.
Not as expensive as you think
Switzerland has always had the reputation of being an expensive ski holiday destination. However, during the holidays periods, Swiss ski resorts are no more expensive than their Austrian or French equivalents. Many resorts offer additional benefits such as a fixed rate for the Swiss franc, or free ski lessons for children so you can made extra savings on your ski holiday too.
Swiss cuisine
Rösti, Fondue and Swiss Raclette are not to be missed. The main ingredient, of course, being regional cheeses! This hearty mountain food will give you enough energy to tackle a long day of skiing on the Swiss ski slopes. You’ll certainly need to burn off those irresistible calories.
So, if you've not already fallen under Switzerland's magic spell, why not choose a Swiss ski resort for your next ski holiday.
