10 signs you can't wait until winter

Happy skiers in Norway

The annual end of ski season is always a terribly sad time. As the snow melts and the ski hills slowly turn green, your mood slowly turns blue. But summer is winding to a close already and believe it or not, the 2018/19 ski season is nearly upon us! If, like us, you find yourself humming après-ski tunes, obsessively checking the alpine snow reports and browsing the web for deals on ski equipment, you’ll probably be relieved to know that the first ski resorts will be opening for the season in just over a month. Not soon enough for you? Here are ten signs that you can’t wait until the start of winter.

1. You only listen to après-ski music

What’s the hottest summer tune this year? You have no idea – your playlist contains only the finest of après-ski numbers. At home, in the car and even on summer holidays at the beach, your speakers are blasting quality hits such as Hey, wir wollen die Eisbären sehen and Jodel Jump. For some inspiration, check out our favourite après-ski songs >

2. You're a regular patron at the indoor ski slopes

Nothing beats the feel of real snow below your skis, but not all of us can afford to fly halfway around the world to ski at one of those exotic southern hemisphere ski resorts. Luckily for us, there’s no shortage of indoor ski halls in the UK to keep us skiing throughout the long summer months.

3. Your diet consists of cheese fondue and kaiserschmarrn

It’s not only the skiing itself that you miss – it’s the whole atmosphere, the Austrian hospitality... oh, who are we kidding. You miss the food!!! Kaiserschmarrn, tiroler gröstl, cheese fondue... and since you can’t just pop into a mountain restaurant, you’ve been learning to make it yourself.

4. You're already browsing this year's ski equipment on the web

Beach mode? Are you kidding? While everybody else has been outside enjoying the sun, you’ve been browsing the internet for the latest skiing equipment and cool gadgets. You’ve already pre-ordered all your ski gear so you’re ready to go at the start of ski season. Everybody is going to be sooo jealous of your retro ski suit! Yeah baby.

5. You're steeped in winter sport nostalgia

Are you that sad soul, spending every evening scrolling through photos of your last ski holiday and wistfully remembering the time you beat your buddy on a race down a black piste? Don’t worry, ski season is coming back soon!

6. You're organising a winter-themed party for all your friends

Barbecue, shmarbecue. The best parties are winter parties, and in honour of the upcoming ski season (only ~100 more days!), you’ve organised a winter party to rival the best of them. Wiener schnitzel and bratwurst, washed down by gigantic German mugs of beer and Schnapps. And, of course, après-ski music on repeat.

7. You're already planning this year's ski holidays

This one goes without saying. You’ve been busy for weeks planning your next ski holiday(s). You can’t decide between Chamonix, Saalbach or one of the lesser-known ski resorts in Europe so you’re thinking maybe two ski holidays this year... spring skiing, anyone?

Where will you ski this year?

8. You check the snow reports daily

You’re glued to the snow reports and you were one of the first ones to know about the surprise snowfall that hit the Alps last week. If you want an easier way to keep updated, sign up for the Snowplaza SnowAlert >

9. You're considering an autumn ski holiday

You know each and every single opening date of the popular ski resorts, and you’re well aware that many of the glacier ski resorts open as early as October. You’re seriously considering booking a cheeky autumn ski trip...

10. You can't wait until you get to wear winter clothes

This heat is horrendous! You can’t wait to be all decked out in a nice cosy ski jacket and mittens, sitting on a mountain terrace with your friends, sipping a cup of hot cocoa with a view of the surrounding alpine peaks after a nice morning of skiing in fresh powder with the sun shining and oh it’s just torture, BRING BACK SKI SEASON ALREADY!

Born and raised in the ski paradise of Vancouver, Canada, I learned to ski before I can remember, balancing precariously on my parents’ skis as they sailed down the hill. I started snowboarding in my teens and am now delighted to be exploring everything Europe’s ski scene has to offer!
