Based on 15 reviews

Zillertal in short

  • One of world’s largest skiing valley
  • Over 540 kilometres of slopes
  • 4 extensive skiing areas

If you choose to go skiing in Zillertal, you have acces to over 540 km of slopes making it one of the largest skiing areas worldwide. The 180 modern gondola’s and skilifts, 8 snowparks and 80 mountains huts are spread out over 4 different skiing areas, which makes Zillertal a very versatile valley as a wintersport destination. All of the skiing areas are accessible by using just one ticket, the Zillertaler Superskipass. Moreover, with that same ticket, you can use the skibus free of charge to shuttle between the different areas when skiing in Zillertal.

There are four areas to choose from when you go skiing in Zillertal. Eventhough they all have their own features, they have at least one thing in common: the slopes are diverse and attract any type of skier or snowboarder. With as many wide slopes as there are challenging routes, there is a run for everyone. For example, you can find really challenging slopes on the so-called action mountain Penken in Mayrhofen, an area that’s also known for its vibrant après-ski. The biggest skiing area is the Zillertal Arena, with over 145 km of slopes. One of the features that is making Zillertal a unique destination, is the skiing area on top of the Hintertuxer Gletscher. The eternal snow on the glacier is making it possible to go skiing 365 days a year. This is the only glacier resort in Austria that is opened all year long. Last but not least, there is the area of Hochzillertal-Hochfügen-Spieljoch, a resort at the entrance of the Zillertal valley. This part is loved mostly because of its wide choice of cozy mountain huts.

Where to go when skiing in Zillertal?

It is quite difficult to say where you should go when you want to go skiing in Zillertal. All four destinations have their own properties and advantages. It all depends on your own preferences. Skiers and snowboarders who think taking breaks and enjoying sun are just as important as going downhill, will for sure enjoy their holiday in the area of Hochzillertal-Hochfügen-Spieljoch, because of the big amount of huts and terraces. Besides, this area is also known for its great freeriding conditions, if you enjoy the powder. A highlight in the Zillertal Arena is the run all the way into the valley of Zell am Ziller. This run is about 10 km long and passes around 2000 meters of height. A challenging, but fun route to take. For those who really want to dare themselves, must try the Harakiri, one of the steepest slopes of Austria and located in Mayrhofen. In Ski- & Gletscherwelt Zillertal 3000 you can acces the Hintertuxer Gletscher and enjoy the snow all year round, thanks to the height of 3250 meters.

Cozy huts with Zillertal specialties

Besides the great skiing possibilities, Zillertal is also known for the good amount of nice huts and restaurants for a break in between. There are many Zillertal specialties to choose from, made with local and regional products. But they also often offer modern culinary delights. Whether you order a traditional or modern dish, without doubt you can taste quality.
