Prior to the opening of the Felber-Tauenr tunnel in 1967, few knew of the existence of the once hard to reach area of Defereggental. Today the tune has certainly changed and tourists benefit from a high amount of activities in this area. Thankfully, developments took place with care and an utmost respect for nature meaning that the region's original character remains intact and visitors immediately recognise the numerous old-style farms, some of which also offer accommodation.
The 2 ski areas are rather small and, from a technical point of view, the slopes are not particularly demanding but this is highly compensated by the beauty of its natural surroundings and small attractive village centres. There are, however, 52km of perfectly maintained slopes that are bathed in sunshine most of the time. There is no mass tourism and no queuing for the lifts in this ski area. In St. Jakob, the main ski resort in this area, family-friendly prices and fun activities are on the agenda.
