Hintertux lies at the end of the Tuxer Valley at the foot of the eponymous glacier. Made up of a handful of hotels, Hintertux is all about skiing! The Hintertux Glacier boasts reliable snow cover and opens for skiing 365 days a year, the only true year-round ski area in Austria. Hintertux isn't an après-ski hotspot or super lively town, but it has the advantage of granting easy acess to the pistes of the Ski Ski Zillertal 3000 linked ski area, which are accessible via the lift in Lanersbach.
Hintertux offers an attractive option for those looking to beat the traffic jams on the way to the glacier, especially in the early and late season. During the high season in winter Hintertux quiets down compared with other ski resorts, as people prefer bigger ski areas with more activities. However, there are still some après-ski options in Hintertux, such as the Hohenhaus Tenne, where people know how to party! A little bit further down the valley is the village of Tux, formerly named Lanersbach, which has more of a lively feel about it with a wider selection of accommodation options and somewhat more of an après-ski scene at bars like the Hexenkessel.
Skiers and snowboarders flock to the Hintertux Glacier in all four seasons to enjoy the reliable snow cover on the glacier's high-altitude slopes. Here, you can ski at altitudes of up to 3250m above sea level, where you're virtually guaranteed to have great snow conditions every time. The Hintertux Glacier is the only ski area in Austria to open every single day of the year, which makes it a popular training ground for professional skiers. In the winter, skiers and snowboarders also have access to 200km of pistes at the neighbouring ski resorts of Mayrhofen, Finkenberg and Lanersbach as part of the Ski Zillertal 3000 linked ski area. This modern ski area includes challenges such as the mind-bogglingly steep Harakiri piste in Mayrhofen. Beginners need not fear, as there are plenty of gentle slopes here as well.
From Madseit to Vorderlanersbach, the area around Lanersbach has 14km of prepared trails for cross-country skiing through the Tuxer Valley. Winter hikers will be pleased to know that there are no less than 68km of walking trails for exploring to your heart's content! Wander from Hintertux to Lanersbach via Madseit, or explore the Eggalm and work your way down into the valley. A lovely way to discover the Tuxer Valley at a different pace!
Lanersbach's Eggalm lift takes families straight up to the winter world of Bruno the Bear, where you'll find a Kinderland with a ski carousel, magic carpet, baby lift and snow tubing course. For older kids, there are also two funslopes for children that lead back down into the valley. The dedicated children's area is free of charge for children who are accompanied by their parents.
Hintertux has its very own après-ski hit, Tux Tux Hintertux! Sing along at the Hexenkessel in Tux, the Hohenhaus Tenne or the Papperlapub, which all have a cosy après-ski scene. If you're looking for something more lively, try the nearby ski town of Mayrhofen, which is known for its après-ski. And on the Hintertux Glacier itself, stop by the Sommerberg-Arena for a drink at the end of the afternoon.
