Dachstein Salzkammergut in short
The villages of Hallstatt, Obertraun, Bad Goisern am Hallstättersee, and Gosau are part of the UNESCO holiday region of Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut. This beautiful region boasts a rich history dating back many centuries. Nature is still relatively unspoilt, the views are phenomenal, and there are many possibilities for winter activities. Skiing is possible in two ski resorts - Dachstein West and Dachstein Krippenstein. The former is perfect for families, while the latter has excellent freeride opportunities.
Winter sports possibilities in the UNESCO region Dachstein Salzkammergut
The Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut holiday region has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997. This has everything to do with the fact that the landscape has played an important role in human history. The region was an ocean millions of years ago, and the evolution of nature has left salt, ammonites and gigantic caves in the mountains. Salt was mined here as early as prehistoric times, and the salt mines continued to be essential for the area's prosperity until the mid-20th century. While in the region, try to spend some time off-piste and enjoy the many unique cultural-historical sights.

Four unique villages
Dachstein Salzkammergut is formed by four unique villages, each with its character and peculiarities. Hallstatt, located on the western shore of Lake Hallstatt, is world-famous and is labelled by many as 'the most beautiful village in Austria'. On the north shore is Bad Goisern am Hallstättersee. This small town is the largest destination of the three and has a very charming centre. The smallest village lies on the south-eastern shore of Lake Hallstatt. Obertraun may be small, but it is very lively. All kinds of events take place here throughout the year. A little further from the lake is Gosau, a real ribbon village stretching over 14 km across the Gosautal valley.
Family ski area Dachstein West
Dachstein West is the largest ski area in Dachstein Salzkammergut. Its more than 50 kilometres of pistes are spread over several mountains in both Upper Austria and Salzburgerland. This family ski area offers many facilities for all ages. For instance, there are several children's lands on the slopes. You can also book family-friendly accommodation in the neighbouring villages. Skiing enthusiasts can try out the 'Dachstein Tour' - a fun ski circuit to explore the ski area. Moreover, the ski resort features many excellent mountain huts.
Freeride hotspot Dachstein Krippenstein
Freesports Arena Dachstein Krippenstein is the smallest ski resort in the Dachstein Salzkammergut region. This snow-sure ski destination boasts some 12 km of slopes, which are exclusively red and blue. Its highlight is the 11 km long valley run, which is also the longest run in Austria. Next to the valley station of the Dachstein Krippensteinbahn, the little ones can visit the Krippi-Park children's land. On the mountain, they can try out the Adventure Park. For freeriders, Dachstein Krippenstein is an absolute hotspot, featuring no less than 30 km of freeride variants.
One ski pass, over 160 km of slopes
