Austria is preparing up for some extreme weather in the coming days. From today onwards, conditions will be wild, with litres of rain in the valleys and the potential for well over 1 to 2 metres of snow at higher altitudes. Last night, another layer of fresh snow fell, and now many places below 2,000 metres in altitude are turning white. Are you watching?

Code Orange: Heavy Snow and Rain

An enormous amount of rain and snow is forecast for Austria over the next few days. Cold air from the northwest, combined with a low-pressure system over Italy, will bring persistent extreme rainfall and snowfall. The Austrian weather service, GeoSphere Austria (ZAMG), issued an official weather warning for extreme rain and snow yesterday. Residents and tourists should expect mudslides, flooding, and heavy snowfall at higher altitudes, which may cause traffic disruptions and power outages. The warning takes effect today and will remain in place until at least early next week.

First snow falls

Yesterday, a new cold front caused a shift in the weather across the Alps. The day began sunny and dry almost everywhere, but by midday, clouds gathered, and rain started to fall. Last night, a layer of snow settled in many places, even well below 2,000 metres in altitude, including in Garmisch-Classic, Westendorf, and Oberstdorf. We at the Snowplaza editorial team are eager to see how much more snow will fall and will, of course, keep you updated. Below are the first images of the snowfall.
