Zugspitzbahn: New cable car opening this weekend in Germany

Zugspitzebahn cable car under construction

After 50 million euros and six years of planning and construction, Bayerische Zugspitzebahn will inaugurate their new Zugspitze cable car this Friday, December 22. The new cable car will whisk skiers and snowboarders up the Zugspitze Mountain, which is the highest mountain in Germany at almost 3000m. From the top, you’ll enjoy stunning panoramic views of more than 400 alpine mountain peaks spanning four countries. The cable car was built in part to accommodate the higher visitor numbers - the ski area now welcomes around half a million people a year. The Zugspitze cable car will replace the former funicular railway.

Record-breaking technology used in the new Zugspitze cable car

The cable car technology breaks three world records. It will contain the highest steelwork pylon in the world for an aerial tramway at 127m, as well as the world’s greatest height difference at 1945m and the longest unsupported span, 3213m. As an added bonus, the windows are heated, allowing for a clear view even on snowy days. The cable car measures around 4.5km and has the capacity to transport 580 passengers per hour.

360° views

The gondola windows are massive, allowing for clear views of the Alps, the Germany-Austria border, the north face of the Zugspitze mountain and even Munich, on clear days. The valley station of the Zugspitze cable car has been completely rebuilt. It features lots of glass and a spacious entrance area with a clear view of the Eibsee and the Zugspitze. In addition to the terrace at the mountain station, the entrance and exit to the cable car will have platforms with panoramic views.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen ski area

The glacier ski area on the Zugspitze Mountain connects to the Garmisch-Partenkirchen ski area for a total of 60km of ski slopes. The ski season is exceptionally long thanks to “snow farming”, a technique used by the Bayerische Zugspitzebahn in which snow depots are created over the summer and deployed in November for an early start to the season. Garmisch Partenkirchen will host the downhill and giant slalom events again this year for the FIS World Cup. Lift passes for the Zugspitze cost 45 euros, with discounts available for families.
